Exhibit Celebrates the Guitar's Dangerous Curves - Art of the Guitar - Brief Articleupon Nov. 5, a new exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, will render free of access that celebrates the guitar as an existence d'art. Featuring more than 130 instruments from museums and private collections around the world, "Dangerous Curves: Art of the Guitar" examines four centuries of innovation and the evolution of the guitar. It remains upon view until Feb. 25, 2001 The exhibit begins with early Baroque pieces, traces the exhibition of the guitar through turn-of-the-20th hundred advancements, explores how the invention of the electric guitar changed the medium, and ends with present-day instruments that continue to incorporate ultra-modern design aspects. Included in the exhibit is individual of the earliest surviving guitars--a Portuguese Belchior Dias dated 1590 "To a far greater stage than any other instrument, the guitar has been interpreted with an extraordinary variety of form and decoration, and it mirrors the aesthetics of the time," said Darcy Kuronen curator of musical instruments at the MFA, who organized the exhibit. "This is as genuine for ornate guitars of the Baroque era, inlaid with ivory and pearl, as it is for 20th hundred electric instruments painted in azure metallic flake." Illustrating his point are the wide variety of guitars place in the exhibit. Highlights include a guitar made through renowned violin maker Antonio Stradivari; Antoine Anciaume's presentation guitar (1840) commemorating the go [i]or[/i] come back of Napoleon's ashes to Paris; a Fender Stratocaster (1963) glowing in "Sonic Blue"; a Martin Backpacker (1994) travel guitar taken to external space in the Space Shuttle; and Chrysalis Guitar Company's semi-inflatable type made in 1999. In addition to the guitars upon view, the MFA is producing a random access audio guide that will be presented free of charge to all visitors of the exhibit, which includes performances by dint of some of today's leading musicians.
