Isaiah 35:4-7a

Psalm 146

James 2:1-10 (11-13) 14-17

Mark 7:24-37

First Reading

We are familiar with this Isaiah body as part of the Advent Season in Year A, the Matthean round of years of readings. There it is paired with John the Baptist's question concerning who Jesus really is, Matt 11:2-11 In the Markan revolution of time this Old Testament pericope is matched with sum of two units miracle stories, one from Tyre the region of the ancient Philistines (Mark 7:24) the other in the area of the Decapolis (ten towns). These are predominately Gentile regions. Jesus is outside his place of abode territory.

The Isaiah body speaks of a wilderness and wild Out of barren land providence will make a "highway" (v 8) with life blooming all around, and upon this highway God will appear. In that day, when the most high comes, the weak will be made strong; the blind will see; the lame will dance. plane the barren landscape will efflorescence and produce.

thus Jesus is in Gentile territory, on the contrary the power of Yahweh within Jesus is not limited by means of location. Even on the seacoast Jesus is able to heal. flat though Jesus slings a racial pollute at the begging woman, she believes Jesus will help her, and she advances back for the "crumbs."

Our daughter, Hannah, 11 pleaded and harryed us to get a dog, and one time we moved to a abiding-place with a big enough area, I acquiesced. I can personally attest that dogs will eat the crumb be they the master's or the master's parents'. The woman "lapped up" Jesus' promise. She took Jesus' insult and revolveed it back on him in faith. What faith!

James asks, "Has the creator chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith?" (2:5b) That is individual wonderful description of the Gentiles in the reading from Mark. Poor, outcast, unwanted, level shunned, they are rich in faith. It is in the "ten towns" that the race exclaim, "He has done all things well!" (See Gen 1:9 "God saw everything that omnipotence had made, and, indeed, it was true good!")

Pastoral Reflection

As a mission developer I--with the race of St. Matthew Lutheran Mission--am in the proces of "birthing," of creating something. Our family came to Central Point, Oregon, from Carbondale, Illinois, bought a place of abode and lived in it among the bare walls for three days until our furniture arrived.

In the course of time the omnipotent has blessed our efforts with a mission gathering, now more than forty tribe with another thirty or with equal reason on the "prospect" list. Ye there are times I wish Jesus would approach spit, touch my tongue (and/or the ears of those upon whom I call), and lay open the doors of St. Matthew to 150 or, better, 550 people!

Then again, I don't think that the highway Isaiah saw in the wilderness was "poured" in month or plane a year. Seems that it took a scarcely any decades for his words to be fulfilled. Or maybe centuries.

When the sperms of faith that we plant efflorescence when the "dogs" lap up the "crumbs" when the invitations we reach forth are not only heard on the other hand truly received and accepted, we can be assured that Isaiah's words are still pure Not only in Israel can lord make the desert bloom. The tribe who fill our pews and their words and performances of faith are evidence of that! TCG
