Looted Iraqi art still AWOL

Amid the turmoil in Iraq this spring, Matthew Bogdanos, the U Marine colonel in charge of recovering art plundered from the Baghdad Museum last year [see "Front Page," June '03] told BBC freshs that he was angered by the agency of the lack of international cooperation in retrieving the stolen items. As his 13-member task force is reassigned, and as he prepares to get back to civilian life later this spring, Bogdanos said that more or less 4,500 works of art and artifacts had been turn backed to the museum over the past year, on the other hand over 8,000 works, including a certain quantity of extremely rare and valuable pieces, are still unaccounted for.

Singling on the outside Interpol, Franca, Switzerland and Dubai as particularly unhelpful, he said that scarcely any governments have offered resources and personnel to aid in the museum's retrieval efforts. Neither Bogdanos's replacement nor a of recent origin U.S. plan for the museum has been announced. Meanwhile, Bogdanos says it will hang on "sheer luck" to regain more items stolen from the Baghdad Museum or from any of the many other cultural institutions and archeological sites through every part of Iraq that were ravaged in the wake of the US-l invasion.
