Busan Biennale trifecta bidSometimes regarded as the "other" Korean biennial city, Busan is giving the better-known Gwangju a move swiftly for its money this year with a three-phase international exposition that reach forths over a five-month period. The Busan plastic art Project [May 22-Aug. 29], installed in the area around the Eulsukdo tillage Center at the mouth of the Nakdong River, features large-scale outdoor work by means of some 20 international artists. The pieces, many fabricated in Busan, are intended to be physically and conceptually accessible through a broad general public. Participants include Kim Dong-Yeon, Ramon Berrios, Kemal Tufan, Liang Shuo Novello Finotti, Heribert Brinkmann Anatol, Toru Saito and Kim Jin-Soo. Of chief interest to art-world regulars is the Contemporary Art Exhibition [Aug. 21-Oct 31] Curated by means of Kookmin University professor Tae Man Choi and Manu Park, exhibitions director at the 2002 Gwangju Biennale, it will not absent three themed sub-shows at the Busan Metropolitan Art Museum. Among the 90 artists showed are Rosemary Laing, Olu Oguibe, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Roman Signer, Ange Leccia and Trinh T Minha. The Sea Art Festival [Oct 9-31] will terminate the Biennale with a selection of about 30 for the greatest part outdoor works at sites in the Haiundae Beach vicinity.
