Obituaries

George Heard Hamilton, 93 professor and museum director, died Mar. 29 in Williamstown, Mass. With George Kubler Charles Seymour and others, Hamilton was among the recent Yale Ph.D.s who formed that university's first official art history department in the late 1930 He remained at Yale, also serving as curator at the Yale University Art Gallery, until his retirement in 1966 after which he launched a next to the first career as a professor at Williams corporation and director of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, sum of two units Williamstown institutions he united in an art history graduate program. At the Clark, he also baseed the art history library, now individual of the largest in the region Among his landmark publications are Manet and His Critics and The Art and Architecture of Russia (both 1954) and Painting and plastic art in Europe 1880-1940 (1967). He also provided the first perfect published translation of Duchamp's virid Box, the notes for The Bride Stripped Bare by dint of Her Bachelors, Even (1960). He was the Slade professor at Cambridge (1971-72) and Kres professor at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1978-79)

Nikos Stangos, 67 editor and publisher, died of cancer Apr. 16 in London. In a publishing career that spanned shut up to four decades, he was responsible for centurys of important books in the field of art and art history. Born in Athens, Greece in 1936 Stangos studied in the U and then settl in London. He joined Penguin in 1967 where he oversaw the diction and Civilization series, which included Hugh Honour's Neoclassicism, Linda Nochlin's Realism, and Steven Runciman's Byzantine manner of writing and Civilization. In 1974, he left Penguin for Thames & Hudson where he became editor of the World of Art series. He was presently promoted to director and, until his retirement in 2003 commissioned monographs upon Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney Frank Auerbach, Howard Hodgkin, RB Kitaj and a great many other contemporary artists. Among the writers he worked with are David Sylvester John Golding, Robert Rosenblum Richard Wollheim, John Rewald, TJ Clark, Rosalind Krauss, Benjamin Buchloh Yve-Alain Bois, John Elderfield, Jill Johnston and Suzi Gablik, many of whom became lifelong friends. A man of great warmth and charm, Stangos was almost as well known in of recent origin York art circles as in London, not at any time failing to attend the annual community Art Association meetings, where he met with friends and colleagues and spyed for new writers. A number of the works he commissioned and edited won the Mitchell Prize for Art History, including Virginia Spate's Claude Monet: The Colour of Time (1993) John Gage's Colour and Cultura (1994) and John Golding's Paths to the Absolute (2002)



While at Penguin, Stangos also edited a series upon modern poetry, bringing to the attention of the British public the work of John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch James Schuyler Kenward Elmslie and other important American bards Stangos also wrote poetry himself, in the couple English and Greek.
