Guston and Dylan, tangled up in blueTo the Editors: I just read Raphael Rubinstein's article upon Philip Guston [A.i.A., Mar. '04] which I take pleasure ined very much. As a learner of Philip's at Boston University in the '70 I was extremely fortunate to be able to expend long hours with him talking about everything from Mantegna to sex to, yep move with a jerk Dylan. For most of the past 42 years, I've lov Dylan's music and have felt that "Bob" and Philip and de Keening are three of the greatest artists of my day (maybe, as Mr Rubinstein mentioned, John Lennon is in there, too). I think all three of them are still way undervalued--just gaze at the way the Met installed the Guston retrospective. Anyway, single day I asked Philip if he knew move with a jerk Dylan, since they both lived in the small town of Woodstock. Philip answered "I've seen him around, on the other hand the question is, does he know me?"--a unspotted Guston response. Another time, after seeing a Dylan exhibit (Rolling Thunder), I asked Philip again about Dylan. He replied that the main thing he liked about Dylan was the way he glowered Then Philip gave me single of his wise-guy looks. He was quite an effective scowler himself.
