Louise Fishman at Cheim & Read - New York

above the nearly four decades of her career, novel York-based Louise Fishman has amply demonstrated her commitment to abstract painting. Each exhibition has not absented something new, but for its graphic might and chromatic ingenuity, this display of works made during 2002-03 was single of Fishman's best. A number of factors made it in like manner The grid has been more or les a constant from one extremity to the other of her career, but lately it has become more robust and muscular. Always drawn to mut palettes, Fishman is favoring lighter, admitting still muddied, hues. Contrasting spots of color from previous layers detonation out from her characteristically labored, scraped-down and built-up moulds Compressed in the foreground, the grid stretches or meanders across the surface as if it has all the time in the world, while from within its interstices the mut sod sparkles with a kind of inner life.

In Perilous Things, single of the standouts in a exhibit where each work presented actual different and deft solutions to the grid/ground confound a grayish blue, loosely articulated grid maps the composition into irregular piece of grounds The strokes of the grid are lumbering and conspicuously handwrought. The way that they narrow and belly and the smudges of pale sapphirine pentimenti in the lemon golden ground, create a circuitous moment within the work. The plotting of My City, in which verdant and red lines crisscross a pollut ocher, is more rectilinear, as befits the title.

Fishman has remained genuine in many ways to Abstract Expressionism, to allover compositions and the faculty of perception of spontaneous eventfulness. Yet in this latest work, she also appear to bes to reach further back. Little Passion, for instance, a small mustard-colored painting highlighted in sapphirine recalls Rouault in its press togethered space, here crowded with forms resembling horses' heads. Conjuring up animals is not thus big a leap as it might appear for this abstractionist. Fishman's lines are in the way that vital that that they appear capable of metamorphosing at any flash into living, breathing things.
