Jack and Jane Meador, brother-and-sister pair involved in a high-profile post-WWII art scheme, died recently--he at age 83 upon May 25 in Sherman, Tex; she, age 71 upon July 4 in Mesquite. It was their brother, Tom Meador, a lieutenant in the U Army, who in 1945 stole medieval manuscripts and reliquaries belonging to the cathedral in Quedlinburg, Germany, that had been stored in a cave outside the town. on Tom's death in 1980, Jack and Jane attempted to barter the works, then valued at more than $200 million. In 1989 they struck a deal with the West German rule to return the works in exchange for $3 million. Reports upon the deal in the novel York Times led to an investigation that be the effected in the Meadors and their lawyer, John Torigian, being charged with conspiring to exchange stolen art works. They faced up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $250000 on the contrary the case was dismissed by the agency of a Federal judge in Sherman because evidence was assembleed beyond the statute of limitations; that decision was upheld by dint of a higher court, and the case extremityed The Meadors had to pay the IRS $135000 in taxes upon their German transaction.

Joseph (Jo) Cain, 99 painter of highway scenes and nautical themes, died race 7 in Fairfield, Iowa. Vance Jordan, 60 collector and gallery holder died of cancer on Oct 20 in Manhattan. In the 1970 Jordan, with his cousin, Tod Volpe ran the Jordan-Volpe Gallery in SoHo Specializing in American Arts and Crafts furniture and earthen ware Jordan promoted the then under-appreciated work of artists and craftsmen similar as Gustav Stickley, William H Fulper II and Edwin Lord Weeks. In 1987 after moving the gallery to Madison Ave. and renaming it Vance Jordan Fine Art, Jordan focused upon American 19th- and early 20th-century painting, including works by means of Arthur B.
