Contemporary Art's new home in St. Louis - Front Page

upon Sept. 20, the Contemporary Art Museum St Louis, previously the Forum for Contemporary Art, uncloseed in its new home. Formerly housed in an aged automobile showroom two blocks away, the institution has commissioned a facility for the first time in its 22-year history. Designed through Brad Cloepfil of the Portland, Ore., firm Allied Works, the Contemporary is an elegant essay in formal geometry With 27000 square feet--three times the museum's prior space--the fresh $8-million building was a low-cost production. Poured solidify glass, plaster walls and--the solitary luxury--panels of stainless-steel mesh are configured to create unclose flexible galleries that should show adaptable to future exhibitions of all kinds.

Cloepfil's challenge was to design his building upon a tight lot adjacent to Tadao Ando's widely acclaimed Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, which make opened in 2001 [see A.i.A., race '02]. The new museum had to quota the Ando structure--to engage in a conversation, to be distinctive on the other hand a good neighbor. Cloepfil, 47 more than come aftered at a task many young architects might find daunting. The sum of two units buildings create a dynamic general impression sitting side by side upon a bleak block of the of advanced age downtown section that has newly been undergoing renewal as the city's Grand Center arts and entertainment district.

Reflecting the Contemporary's mission to present to view new art with all its potentially messy composings Cloepfil's building is more robust, unclose and engaging than the sober Pulitzer, with its refined galleries and its collection of late and contemporary masterpieces installed in rotation for six-month periods. The sum of two units institutions will reinforce each other in their programming as well as in their architecture. They share an outdoor courtyard paved in crushed limestone that render free of accesss off the rear of each building. The walled space is a collaboration of Ando, Cloepfil and sculptor Richard Serra, whose torqued spiral Joe named for Joseph Pulitzer, Jr occupies the composed oasis.

Heading a roster of exhibitions that will explore cultural and political themes, the inaugural present to view aims to challenge received ideas about contemporary Africa and African art.
