Goldsworthy's Living Memorial - Front Page - Garden of Stones - Brief Article

Andy Goldsworthy's installation Garden of Stones, a memorial dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, was not long ago unveiled at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan. The $1-million shoot forward was a collaboration between the museum and the Public Art capital Permanently sited in a second-floor 4,150-square-foot riverfront garden adjacent to the museum's fresh Robert M. Morgenthau wing, the installation view from aboves New York Harbor, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The English artist subtitled the work A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, since it features 18 large boulder (weighing from 3 to 13 tons and ranging from 3 to 5 feet high) each implanted with a live dwarf oak sapling. The number of stones corresponds to the 18th alphabetic character of the Hebrew alphabet, chai, a emblem of life. Visitors can wander among the boulder upon narrow pathways. The artist not absents the effort of organic forms to survive amid adverse simple bodys as a metaphor for the hardships, toils and tenacity of those who survived the Holocaust.

In keeping with his other casts Goldsworthy employed only natural ultimate parts However, to hollow out the glacial boulder made of Vermont granite, he used a high-intensity blowtorch. He chose a species of oak that can live several hundr years on the other hand takes about a century to increase to just 12 feet. The stone may constrict the roots and body as the tree develops and could eventually kill it, on the other hand Goldsworthy has provided the museum with sum of two units options in that event: a number of dead tree could be left standing among the living, or the boulder can be replanted with of recent origin seedlings.
