A throw to clean Michelangelo's David (1504) has lately sparked an international controversy about way s of restoring marble masterpieces. The primary question is whether to attempt to get back the 14-foot-tall sculpture to its original condition or to give it a les invasive cleaning to dislodge the most visible grime. Among the endeavor's other uncertainties is whether to use a "wet" or "dry" technique for the task. Using start up capitals of $165,000, provided by an anonymous Dutch philanthropist, the $400000 cleaning effort was organized by means of Antonio Paolucci, chief superintendent for Florence and Tuscany at the Italian Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities.
