You-ree-aUrea: A water-soluble amalgamate C[O(N[H.sub.2]).sub.2], that is the major nitrogenous extreme point product of protein metabolism and is the chief nitrogenous composing of the urine in mammals and other organisms. It's not a beautiful word. It's not a word that falls easily upon new millennium ears. Despite the fact it is an accurate word in describing what it is, it may not level be a politically correct word. Certainly, it is not a word to be said in polite company, above drinks or during aperitifs. "Please, must you say that now, here?" It is, however, a word that you will be hearing and reading more between now and 2010 The novel announcement that Mack and Volvo will use SCR to proper the 2010 emissions regs--a a whole that involves injecting a liquid urea solution into the engine exhaust--is probably the first among many like announcements as buck and male engine manufacturers begin to condition the market for the 2010 emissions regulations. It has lengthy been speculated that with single notable exception, everyone would have to gaze to SCR for 2010. It appears to be coming true BMW followed that announcement by means of saying it would likely barter diesel cars in the U with technology that includes a urea-based additive. Welcome to the future And welcome also to the latest circular of political posturing between the industry and EPA. EPA has, quite rightly, maintained an apparent technology-neutral stance when it approachs to diesel exhaust emissions. "We gave you the numbers, do what you have to do." Kinda. EPA has, or part of to the other various channels, let it be known that if SCR was to be the answer, the industry better reassure EPA that SCR will do what is says it will do and sway N[O.sub.x] over the same conditions and temperatures as any other technology. And EPA will wanna know definitively that vehicles are not switching not on the urea injection system (and thus being noncompliant) whenever they have feeling like it. In EPA's mind, the industry has already done something like that once; diocese Consent Decree 1999. The other issue has always been availability. Folk are gonna wanna know, where do we come by the stuff? In today's market, a technology that requires a male running from Chicago to Phoenix to chase and search for a source of urea, just isn't going to work. It had better be available at each buck stop, fuel station and wide speck in the road at least along each interstate and major state highways. Time is always coin and searching for a station with urea ain't in the cards. Not a question at issue I have enough confidence in the profit a whole in the U.S. that if enough manufacturers announce SCR the distribution, investment and marketing communities will realize there's a fresh market and get the matter on shelves everywhere. If there's circulating medium to be made today, clan will find a way. Watch by what mode fast it happens.
