Mies's Farnsworth House: For All to See - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, house national landmark - Brief ArticleThe Farnsworth House, the solitary residence in the U.S. built through Mies van der Rohe, will by and by become a museum. Committee members include architect Helmut Jahn, Chicago art dealer Richard Gray, architectural historian and Mies biographer Franz Schulze (who also wrote a volume about the house), as well as former Illinois governor James R Thompson The assemblage mounted a successful campaign to convince the state's department of historic preservation to purchase the house and open it to the public. The Farnsworth House is located upon 61 acres in Plano, about 50 miles west of Chicago. Complet in 1951 the International phraseology structure was originally built as a weekend retreat for Chicago physician Edith Farnsworth, who continued to live in the house until 1971 when she sold it to Palumbo.
