Ludwig Schwarz at Angstrom - Brief Article

In previous exhibitions, Ludwig Schwarz has shown everything from abstract paintings to plastic art made from his laundry. For this outing, the work consisted chiefly of columns of large color photographs pinned directly to the wall and thrift-shop paintings slightly altered by dint of the artist and combined in wall-mounted constructions. through titling the exhibition "True," Schwarz avoided the grandiosity and land-minelike perils of "The Truth" and opt for consensus building.

The photographs were 20-by-30-inch prints, a size chosen because it is the largest available from the photo department of the drugstore that does Schwarz's processing. In pure serial fashion, the images refused to form a narrative. It was simply individual thing after another: a shopping cart tipped above on a sidewalk, the leftovers of a Chinese meal, a dog's twisted corpse. Each round pillar included one smiling face, caught through the artist at either a stoplight or a checkout calculator In at least this viewer's effort to make faculty of perception of things, those faces invited us to acknowledge the comic forlornness manifested by the agency of the other photographs--in other words, to accept them as true

Previous exhibitions of thrift-shop paintings have encouraged us to laugh at and regard with affection them simultaneously. Schwarz, engages in a complicated act of assimilation with them. Like the photographs, the paintings become serial constructions as Schwarz arranges them in patterns thrust from the wall upon 20-inch supports. In one work, cogitation bubbles appear above two souses "Houses of the Holy," says single "Communication Breakdown," reads the other. To a painting of a descending fighter jet the artist adds the title Elie Wiesel v The Dallas Cowboy Many of the original artists clearly were followers of the late PB landscape guru move with a jerk Ross, and this provides Schwarz with an alpine lake to infest with shark fins and a mountain stream to span with a poorly painted bridge. Schwarz's annotations neither mimic nor improve on the originals. They make them strange.

limits like "slacker esthetic" show up in discussions of this mark of work, but I am impressed by the agency of the rigor of Schwarz's thinking. The definitive piece in this exhibition was the aptly titled Table, a 3-by-8-foot piece of work with collapsible metal legs. locate just inside the gallery's brow door, it caused a mild inconvenience. Schwarz had painted its work surface with many layers of orangy brown paint, emphasizing signs of use and damage. Whatever its relationship to the tradition of the readymade or the history of passive-aggression, it existed primarily to define the work of art as an thing you might not notice if it didn't have a label and wasn't slightly in the way.
