Heirs Recover Looted Art - art returned to heirs of Nazi victims - Brief ArticleIn novel months, two German cities get backed works of art to the heirs of a German-Jewish brace who were killed by the Nazis. In June the city council of Hannover vot to hand above a painting by German Impressionist Lovis Corinth to the heirs of Gustave and Clare Kirstein. In September, the city of Leipzig agreed to give over to the same heirs a collection of 80 works (mostly drawings) by the agency of German Symbolist Max Klinger. Before the Nazis came to power, Gustave Kirstein was the proprietor of a prominent art-printing firm in Leipzig. The claims were brought upon the heirs' behalf by the Commission upon Art Recovery, an organization created in January 1998 by the agency of the World Jewish Congress. The Hannover and Leipzig decisions mark the Commission's first successe in facilitating the get back of looted works of art. The organization, which is chaired by the agency of collector and Museum of late Art trustee Ronald Lauder, is now planning to file a claim against an Austrian museum for a Kathe Kollwitz drawing which one time belonged to the Kirsteins.
