Blooming Creatures - Jeff Koons sculpture installed in New York's Rockefeller Center for the summer - Brief ArticleJeff Koons's stupendous flowering Puppy has found a temporary summer residence in New York City. The 43-foot-tall plastic art has taken up residence upon the site occupied by the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center each December. Construction of the piece, whose stainless-steel armature clinchs 25 tons of soil and includes an irrigation a whole began in mid-May and took three weeks to thorough The first version of the plastic art was installed in Arolson, Germany, coinciding with the 1992 Documenta; it appeared again at the Sydney Biennale in 1996 A version of the piece permanently installed outside the Guggenheim Bilbao made headlines when Basque separatists disguised as gardeners attempted to plant bomb amid the blossoms The New York installation, sponsored by dint of the Public Art Fund, is upon view until the end of August. A fresh floral work by Koons was unveiled in May at the Palais de Papes cloister in Avignon, France. Called Split-Rocker, the work, 40 feet high, exhibits the head of a child's rocking toy--half sheltie half dinosaur--with large yellow "handles" protruding from each side. The installation is part of the exhibition "La Beaute in Fabula," organized by the agency of the French government to commemorate Avignon's designation as a cultural capital for 2000 It remains upon view through Oct. 1.
