Richard Wentworth at Lisson - sculpture and photographs; England - Brief ArticleThis exhibition featured new sculptures and photographs by Richard Wentworth, an influential artist and teacher whose former scholars at Goldsmiths' College in London include a number of well-known Brit-pack members. Wentworth, who has been showing since the mid-1970s, is known for statuarys in which he "adjusts" readymades, including manufactured phenomenons such as buckets and ladders. In the eight statuarys shown, he melds found things and other materials into enigmatic configurations. Wentworth's photographs mirror a similar sensibility. In them, he records the poetic ways happenstance and necessity tend to the same point in daily life. Initiated as a slide present to view in 1979, the photo series "Making Do and Getting By" continues to swell as the artist periodically adds of recent origin images to the group. In single example, a book props lay open a window; another shows a missing glove stuck on a finial. It appears to wave for attention. A novel photo series titled "Occasional Geometries" documents serendipitous formal patterns, of that kind as the symmetry of flowers arranged upon a balcony and reflected in a drawn out horizontal mirror.
