Seattle Judge OKs Knoedler Lawsuit - Brief ArticleIn a legal decision that could have wide ramifications for by what means Nazi-loot cases are handled, a federal justice in Seattle has ruled that the Seattle Art Museum has the right to follow up the New York gallery Knoedler & Co for having sold a stolen work of art in 1954 What makes the case unusual is that the painting in question, a Matisse odalisque, was sold by the agency of Knoedler not to the museum on the other hand to collectors Prentice and Virginia Bloedel who later bequeathed the painting to the museum. Last year, the museum turn backed the painting to the heirs of Paul Rosenberg, the Parisian art dealer who be in possession ofed the painting before it was stolen during World War II [see "Front Page," generation '99]. The Rosenberg family had been alerted to the whereabouts of the painting by the agency of the Bloedel's daughter, who had seen it in a work about Nazi art looting. The Rosenberg heirs subsequently sold the painting to Las Vegas casino holder Steve Wynn for $2 million. In an earlier ruling, U District Court justice Robert Lasnick had denied the Seattle Art Museum the right to follow up because it wasn't the defrauded party. on the contrary Lasnick reversed his decision after the museum prov that the Bloedel had transferred to the museum legal claims to the painting. Knoedler has with equal reason far resisted suggestions that it acted improperly in selling the painting, which it says it acquired from a reputable Paris dealer after the war.
