Bradley Rubenstein at Clifford SmithBradley Rubenstein's new (1997-99) paintings and drawings of mismatched and morphing figures upon blank white grounds are rather cold depictions of hot-button subjects. Naked children with giant ears where their heads should be or three enormous dark toes sprouting like dragon scales from their sides are the substance of nightmares. Yet Rubenstein nears them in a detached, filmic phraseology with references to the latest technical imaging tricks. Modeling, for instance, is done by the agency of breaking down the surface of the form into graduated tiers of color tones that recall digital photographic enlargement. There's dooms of white space within the image, suggesting "burn out" or film overexposure His use of monochrome leaves to cyanotypes, film negatives or process-color printing; his subtly ironic retro colors might be inspired by the agency of fashion-toned/Macs. One crouching figure (all the works are untitled) in purple-violet ink tones upon paper looks like a small child with three overscaled fingers where the head should be, or like a rabbit with three ears. In an oil-on-canvas painting, a little girl's head is replaced with a clenched fist, also scaled larger than the figure on the contrary in proportions that still gaze childishly pudgy. Another ink-on-paper work features a rear view of a naked child, bent above with its head obliterated by the agency of a giant ear. A new news image of a living mouse with a human ear grafted upon its back immediately came to mind. Rubenstein's work has reportedly nettleed some viewers who think that deformed children are unsuitable make submissive matter for contemporary art. on the contrary they read his work too literally. His paintings are the pair sinister and ironic, but for conceptual and metaphoric reasons. He fuses low-tech painting with the gaze of high-tech reproduction methods familiar from increasingly salacious advertising, which can alone remind one that the uncensored images with which we (children included) are now bombarded seriously compromise innocence. His human chimeras also capture the mischievous spirit of our rebellious, shape-shifting inner children, whose permanent reply to the world might well be a clenched fist. As hybrids from the image world, Rubenstein's pictures are more prophetic and darkly laughable than grotesque. COPYRIGHT 2000 Brant Publications, Inc.
