Janna Dekker and Jan van Leeuwen at the Cleveland Museum of ArtThe still-life images of Dutch photographers Janna Dekker and Jan van Leeuwen restage pictorialist debates that belong to the past. With nine monochrome prints each, they not awayed an old-fashioned intimacy of viewing that is characteristic of earlier Dutch painting, on the contrary is now lost to our hurried sensibility. Born in 1932 van Leeuwen became an artist solitary in his 50s. He is known for his cathartic self-portrait photographs spurr through his childhood in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. completely through his work, he revisits 19th-century processe using an antique view camera that takes 12-by-16-inch resin-coated paper negatives. The resulting contact prints shown here are, with individual exception, not the cyanotypes and calotypes of the self-portraits. Instead, these close-up of dahlias, hanging tulips, subdue by fear parsley and other flowering plants are brown-toned Van Dyke kallitypes, yielding a characteristically yielding focus, reduced detail and extremely shallow deepness of field. Sunflowers (1995) catches three wilting blooms faces turned to the surface of land petals just beginning to ringlet To his credit, van Leeuwen avoids tedious truisms about the inevitability of mortality and of the like kind as the sunflowers, seen in their dying seconds display all the textural richness of a lovingly crafted silverpoint. It is this freshnes of visual pleasure that van Leeuwen's antique courses bring: they offer a richly contemplative experience. through contrast, the younger Dekker, included in this, her first U exhibition, upon van Leeuwen's recommendation, uses a 35mm camera to transform a kitchen table into a sharply focused stagelike space. In individual photograph, this table holds a wicker basket piled high with cherries; in another, a tightly stoppered glass jar in which sum of two units peaches gently float. Both works capture the spare esthetics of a domestic ideal. She always let flys in natural light, which usually streams in from a cropp window at the cutting side of the composition, creating a tenebrist tableau of brilliant whites and jet blacks. For single untitled 1992 print, Dekker placed sum of two units shriveled apples in sunlight to the left of a simple terra-cotta flowerpot filled with more fruits of the same sort. A solitary apple snuggles in the shadow to the right. The pageant unfolds with a theatrical time one vignette after the other. of that kind contrived drama in Dekker's work can be a shortcoming, a risk also shared through van Leeuwen, as both photographers look after to infuse the commonplace with an intimacy and poetics normally absent. That this time-honored ambition becomes a didactic close attention of photographic techniques in this exhibition is more the fault of the curator than the artists. Your choice, fuzzy or straight?
