Creative Capital Gives First Grants - Brief ArticleCreative Capital, rested in January 1999 [see "Artworld," June '99] has announced its first circular of grants, totaling $563,700, to 75 artists in 16 states (out of 1807 applicants from 46 states). The grants range from $3200 to $20000 and were given in the areas of media, performance, visual arts and emerging fields. The foundation takes a novel approach to funding artists, like as requiring recipients to share a small percentage of any profits to be applied toward novel grants. Among some 30 supporting institutions are the Andy Warhol Foundation, the Peter Norton Family Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation. Recipients in the emerging fields category include Betty Beaumont, Natalie Bookchin and John Simon, Jr Winners of media arts grants include Peggy Ahwesh, Barbara Hammer and Joanna Priestly. Among the recipients in the performance category are Joe Goode Meredith Monk Elizabeth Streb and Basil Twist. Visual artists awarded grants include Xenobia Bailey, Tony Coke Chris Doyle, Maria Elena Gonzalez, Wendy Jacob, Zoe Leonard, Jyung Park, Joseph Scanlan and Mci Zeigler.
