Vermeer: The Opera. - Review - opera reviewBritish filmmaker Peter Greenaway, an ardent admirer of classical painting, was in like manner taken with the 1996 Vermeer exhibition in The Hague that he began to imagine a stage production based upon the life and work of the Dutch master. The surprising result: Writing to Vermeer an opera that features a libretto by dint of Greenaway and music by the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen. Having first attempted in Amsterdam in December, it will be not awayed at New York's Lincoln Center in July The opera is based upon a real episode in the painter's life. In May 1672 Vermeer traveled from his abode in Delft to The Hague, where he worn out 14 days helping to authenticate a cluster of Italian paintings. Greenaway's libretto consists of 18 fictive alphabetic characters supposedly sent to the painter during his absence through his wife, his mother-in-law and single of his models. The alphabetic characters reveal the enormous distance that separates Vermeer's undisturbed canvases from the violent upheavals then shaking the Netherlands--political lynchings, religious rioting, economic crises and the invasion of Louis XIV's French army. Not surprisingly, Writing to Vermeer also highlights Greenaway's have image-saturated visual style. While the main stage is occupied by dint of sets based on Vermeer's interiors, cinematic projections render free of access up numerous "windows" that reveal the 17th-century world outside or zoom in upon details of the paintings.
