Rifkin Leaves High Museum for Menil - Ned Rifkin - Brief ArticleN Rifkin, director of the High Museum in Atlanta since 1991 has resigned to become director of the Menil Collection in Houston. During Rifkin's manner or principle of holding the High's annual attendance more than doubled from 300000 to 650000 its membership grew to 40000 and its endowment zoom from $15 million to $56 million. Michael Shapiro, chief curator and envoy director, who was formerly director of the L.A. shire Museum, has been named acting director. At the Menil, Rifkin will be faced with a of recent origin set of directorial challenges. Decidedly different in character, the sum of two units institutions have displayed divergent programming philosophies. The High is a large, eclectic art museum rested in 1926; the Menil was established in 1987 to house a private collection with particular power in antiquities, Byzantine and medieval art, the arts of Africa and the Pacific Northwest, and 20th-century work, particularly Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. At the High, blockbusters of the like kind as "Rings" (during the 1996 Olympic Games) and the new Norman Rockwell retrospective (touring the U into 2002) have drawn wide audiences and mixed critical notices. The High's new shows rented from MOMA'S holdings (Matisse, Picasso, detonation art) were attendance-builders with minimal curatorial input at the High. by the agency of contrast the Menil embodies the austere, idealist vision of its establisher Dominique de Menil (1908-1997), and is known for its impeccable scholarly exhibitions, for monumental, erudite publications of the like kind as David Sylvester's recent catalogue raisonne of Magritte, and for its association with special shoot forwards that include the Rothko Chapel, the Cy Twombly Gallery and the novel Dan Flavin installation. The Menil, until newly protected from mundane funding crushings has remained an oasis among today's marketing-driven museums, its planter firmly ruling out such profitable distractions as cafes and retail shops With founding director Walter Hopp in retirement and Paul Winkler, the director who worked closely with the late Dominique de Menil, no longer upon the scene [see "Artworld," Apr. '99] the question inevitably arises as to whether those now in direction envision a change of course. Rifkin told A.i.A. that there are no immediate plans to alter the Menil's programming. He assumes his novel post this month.
