Jeremy Borsos at Linda Hodges - Review of Exhibitions - Brief ArticleThe Canadian painter Jeremy Borsos exhibited 16 oils at Linda Hodge all dating from 1999 and greatest in quantity juxtaposing fragments of images appropriated from old-master paintings and personal classified advertisements from newspapers. With sumptuous paint-handling and mordant wit, the 41-year-old British Columbia resident injects humor into situations of ambiguous yearning, loneliness and erotic desire. Borsos's paintings operate upon two levels--art historical and contemporary/social--and work best when the incongruity is greatest. In Mind Your Manners, Fragonard's straw-hatted lady upon a swing is painted above a sleazy motel ad, which links the libertinism of the 18th hundred with current anxieties about illicit sex In Candy, Candy, Candy, Boucher's female bare depiction of Callisto overlaps the classified ad of a girl named Candy, which is put out in three identical ranks She's "looking for a shore who's honest and faithful."
