Jeremy Borsos at Linda Hodges - Review of Exhibitions - Brief ArticleThe Canadian painter Jeremy Borsos exhibited 16 oils at Linda Hodge all dating from 1999 and greatest in quantity juxtaposing fragments of images appropriated from old-master paintings and personal classified advertisements from newspapers. With sumptuous paint-handling and mordant wit, the 41-year-old British Columbia resident injects humor into situations of ambiguous yearning, loneliness and erotic desire. Borsos's paintings operate upon two levels--art historical and contemporary/social--and work best when the incongruity is greatest. In Mind Your Manners, Fragonard's straw-hatted lady upon a swing is painted above a sleazy motel ad, which links the libertinism of the 18th hundred with current anxieties about illicit sex In Candy, Candy, Candy, Boucher's female bare depiction of Callisto overlaps the classified ad of a girl named Candy, which is put out in three identical ranks She's "looking for a shore who's honest and faithful." In the couple these works, the rest of the canvas is decorated with stylized flowers similar to a wallpaper pattern. If more or less works fall flat when the viewer lacks knowledge of the art-historical originals, other works are les pendent upon learned recognition. Some People's Children places undressed diagrams of World War I-era biplanes and submarines above an idyllic, exquisitely painted Claude-like landscape where sum of two units boys play with a toy sailboat at a lakeshore. About to be swept up through the Great War, the youths strike one as being haunted by the apparitions of aerial and marine combat. Borsos supplies enough unexpect juxtapositions, coupl with felicitous brushwork, to achieve the remarkable: witty or charming paintings that make us think seriously about the attitudes of the Enlightenment toward sex and empire, as well as our have era's preoccupations.
