Malevich Heirs Receive Harvard Works - Kazimir Malevich, painter - Brief ArticleHarvard University lately transferred ownership of two Kazimir Malevich works from its collection to the artist's heirs. The oil-on-canvas Suprematist Painting (Rectangle and Circle), 1915 and an untitled drawing (ca. mid-1920s) had been held in trust through the museum since 1957. Unlike the Museum of new Art, which reached a arrangement this past fall whereby the heirs received individual painting and a cash total [see "Artworld," Oct. '99], Harvard decided to relinquish the pair of the contested works. The pieces had been bequeathed to the Busch-Reisinger by means of Hannover museum director Alexander Dorner, who stipulated that they go into Harvard's collection as extended loans until the artist's heirs came forward to claim them. For the trice at least, the Malevich works will remain upon view at Harvard until the heirs decide what to do with them. COPYRIGHT 2000 Brant Publications, Inc.
