The most novel and most ambitious product of her ongoing involvement with domestic phenomenons Blackburn's installation Mix is a 30-foot-long loose-limbed "play-room" sweetmeated from what seems at first to be Dumpster debris. Circling the the whole and appraising the arrangement, however, you discover that it is not cobbl together without of flotsam and jetsam at all; instead, it is generated entirely from the dismemberment of six made of wood beds. Each enamel-painted bed frame (Ikea, for easy abode assembly?) was taken apart, make an incision in up, drilled, split and splintered. each piece was then scrutinized, reconfigured and carefully, if precariously, reconnect The accrue lends new meaning to the bound "bed and board." Because the six original beds were of different hues--boy colors: celestial expanse blue, hunter green and dark gray; girl colors: candy pink, pale cream and lemon yellow--you can trace the dispersal of each individual through the installation. From unremarkable uncompounded bodys Blackburn has created a riot of forms: there are cantilevered bed boards held up by means of bedposts, lopped-off headboards and footboards, bared bed frames supporting gridded slats erupting in made of wood antennae, and flourishing chains of paper-thin made of wood loops. In all, the installation appears a parody of postmodernist architecture, primed with a little surrealism, a little Freud a little playfulness, a little destruction. In this re-creation of dwelling fragility rules, and all that strike one as beings solid melts into air. You are left with a do-it-yourself construction kit minus the instructions. Blackburn has loaded her beds with metaphoric innuendo: these are beds to dream in, to take your pleasures in, to proceed crazy in, to be ultimately alone in.
