Lowery Sims to Head to Studio Museum - Brief Article

Les than individual month after director Kinshasha Holman Conwill announced her resignation, the Studio Museum in Harlem has pitch uponed Lowery Stokes Sims as its novel director. Since 1975, Sims has held various curatorial positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in novel York, most recently as curator of 20th-century art.

While at the Met Sims organized exhibitions of similar artists as Hans Hofmann, Stuart Davis, Richard Pousette-Dart, Paul Cadmus and Barbara Chase-Riboud. She has also curated assemblage shows for the Met and other museums, including "Next Generation: Southern Black Aesthetic," which traveled to five southern venue in 1990-92 She cocurated the display of Wifredo Lam and his contemporaries that appeared at the Studio Museum in 1992-93 Sims also regularly contributes essays to exhibition catalogues, including those for the Norman Lewis exhibition at the Studio Museum (1998) and the traveling Elizabeth Catlett retrospective organized through the Neuberger Museum of Art, in Purchase, NY as well as the upcoming catalogue raisonne of Jacob Lawrence, which will be published in fall 2000 and will accompany the traveling display of his work that first attempts the following summer at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC
