Bill McDowell at Jan Kesner - review of exhibitions - Brief Article

In his beautifully nuanced black-and-white photographs put in Lily Dale, a tiny community of active spiritualists in upstate of recent origin York, Bill McDowell plays with the notion of photography as a "medium" that can communicate the couple the everyday and the other-worldly. Established in the late 19th hundred and once widely publicized, Lily Dale today is dwelling to 35 practicing mediums who tender clients contact with the spirit world. In 1991 McDowell began photographing these mediums at work, on the contrary he soon moved from producing portraits to making, as he bring it, "photographs which dealt more with my spiritual confusion and ambivalence."

The photographs in this exhibition, greatest in quantity from 1994-96, were previously shown at the Robert Menschel Photography Gallery, Syracuse University. mainly devoid of human figures, they call up off-kilter moments in the old-fashioned parlors, attics and civic auditorium of Lily Dale. In Television, Lamp and Spirit Painting of Napoleon, Maplewood house of entertainment a brightly blank TV defence and blazing floor lamp twig a piano stool that present the appearances just vacated by an unknown vicinity The empty, spotlit plush seats in Three Chairs, Auditorium Platform look to conjure three invisible dignitaries ready to chat.

McDowell treats his eerie material with just the right dead-pan tone, not at any time stooping to gothic cliches. by means of largely avoiding human subjects, he eschews the odd surreal tone of, say, Clarence John Laughlin or Ralph Eugene Meatyard. He clods his works in a sharp-focus realism mitigated by dint of moody lighting. A centrally positioned pull-cord in a dowdy compass a mirrored reflection of a carpeted staircase and a cobweb upon a '50s ceiling fixture are all dramatized through light that seems the emissary of the afterworld.

Without really committing himself to spiritualism, McDowell advises the otherworldliness that hovers around the cutting sides of the everyday. In Hilda Discussing Astrology, Wilkinson House, the arm of an aging medium points upward, beyond a table holding a plastic flower arrangement and four dimestore placemats depicting the solar combination of parts to form a whole Lit delicately from above, the woman's arm becomes a vector leading us to another realm.
