Philip Johnson's Boogie Nights - Brief Article

P 1's "Warm Up" summer series was a sleeper hit last year, with hosts of art- and music-lovers filling the courtyard to listen to DJ dance and direct the eye at work, including funky plastic arts by the Austrian group Gelatin. This year, renowned architect Philip Johnson has designed a DJ booth and dance pavilion for the museum's triangular courtyard. It is the first throw out jointly produced with the Museum of new Art--where Johnson founded the architecture department and is life trustee--since the sum of two units museums announced their merger earlier this year [see "Front Page," Mar. '99] The arrangement consists of a DJ area, dance floor, bleacher-style benches, platforms for sitting or standing, and five towers made from galvanized carburet of iron scaffolding and white aluminum interstice topped with banners. The "Warm Up" series continues each Saturday from 4 to 9 PM end Sept. 11. This year's program also includes a film festival upon Thursday evenings from July 15 to family 16.
