NEW YORK: Osmo Rauhala at Lance Fung - review of exhibitions - Brief ArticleImages of deer have drawn out figured prominently in the paintings of Finnish artist Osmo Rauhala, and they're also the control of his absorbing video installation The hid of the Forest, which has been exhibited internationally in various forms since 1992 Here, the gallery was darkened, creating an air of uncertainty, mystery and discovery. In the center of the scope a fragile tent-like construction made of dyll woven fabric (a transparent mesh used in the theater) housed a video projector; in brow of it, a row of several square or rectangular pieces of glass come downed from the ceiling. An unobtrusive fan emitted a slight zephyr causing the glass planes to twirl slowly about. The video bight featuring close-ups of deer in the forests of Finland, was throw backed by the rotating glass, in the way that that the images slid along the pair the walls of the gallery and the fabric enclosure What you saw were multiple, almost kaleidoscopic, versions of the shoot forwarded images--a deer scrambling up a hill, gingerly stepping above a barrier or looking directly at the camera--as they alternately lengthened, shortened, twitched apart or came together. There was something disconcerting to this spectacle, a bit like being inside a hall of mirrors at the amusement park. It was also hypnotically gorgeous. Rauhala is obviously aware of the mythic part that deer have played in Finnish agriculture as symbols of connection to nature and to nature's power. As you stood environed by this slowly mobile pageant of deer upon the walls, it seemed that the gallery itself was being inexorably whisked away to the forests of Finland and the primal life therein. The experience was indeed transportive and meditative. The installation revealed Rauhala's other interests as well, for instance his longtime fascination with chaos theory. Because of the random motion of the reflective glass, the repeated video-loop images were not ever quite the same. While this quality yielded a quietly seething flowing a considerable serenity and wonderment also emerg Moreover, the installation, with its yielding fabric hut and dangling glass, had a refreshingly tactile appeal which distantly alluded to painting. shoot forwarded through fabric into the gallery space, these video images assumed a mixed ever-changing life of their own COPYRIGHT 1999 Brant Publications, Inc.
