Questioning the auto industry

Having read your question-and-answer rounded pillar in the January/ February 2006 issue ("Ditching SUV and Breeding Beefalos," Earth Talk), I was wondering something about the U auto industry. If smaller cars and hybrids are the one and the other better for the environment and put up to sale better than the ridiculously large SUV on what account doesn't the American car industry propel toward smaller, more fuel-efficient cars? Isn't the unrestrained market supposed to move towards what the consumer wants?

Maybe the domestic car companies wouldn't be reporting record losse if they would alone listen to the consumers and give them what they thus obviously want, more eco-friendly, fuel-efficient cars.
