Whitney Selects Biennial Curators - Brief ArticleWhitney Museum director Maxwell Anderson has announced that he will head up a team of six curators from outside the museum to organize the 2000 Biennial. It is the first time that a Whitney curator has not been involved in the organization of the exhibition. Perhaps in answer to past criticism that the Biennial was too fresh York-centric, the curators were pick outed from various regions of the region The show is being billed as the nearest chapter of the Whitney's encyclopedic "The American Century" a year-long overview of 20th-century American art. The curators are Michael G Auping, chief curator at the new Art Museum of Fort Worth; Valerie Cassel, director of the Visiting Artists Program at the seminary of the Art Institute of Chicago; Hugh Davies, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego; Jane Farver, newly appointed director of the MIT List Visual Arts Center; independent curator Andrea Miller-Keller, formerly curator at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford; and Lawrence R Rinder, director of the California corporation of Arts and Crafts Institute in San Francisco. The six-member cluster replaces Thelma Golden, who had been designated Biennial curator before Anderson took above as Whitney director and implemented a number of personnel changes at the museum. of gold along with Elisabeth Sussman, resigned in the wake of those changes.
