Two Top Museum Posts Filled

The Whitney Museum is losing at the same time another curator. Lisa Phillips, who has been with the museum in various capacities since 1977 has resigned in order to become director of the of recent origin Museum of Contemporary Art (which coincidentally was rested in 1977 by another Whitney curator). Phillips was lately put in charge of the Whitney's collection of contemporary art by means of Maxwell Anderson in the restructuring that l to the abrupt resignations of Thelma of gold and Elisabeth Sussman. But Phillips's announcement reportedly took Anderson by dint of surprise.

While at the Whitney, Phillips organized of that kind exhibitions as "Beat Culture and the fresh America: 1950-1965" (1995) and displays of Frederick Kiesler (1989), Cindy Sherman (1987) Richard Prince (1992) and Terry Winters (1992) She also worked upon each biennial from 1985 to 1993 and was co-curator, with Louise Neri, of the 1997 version. Phillips has been overseeing the organization of the next to the first part of the Whitney's massive exhibition "The American Century" which make opens in September (Part I lay opens in April).

Phillips assumes her novel position in April. She joins the novel Museum one year after its $2.3-million renovation and expansion that doubled its exhibition space. Phillips come afters founding director Marcia Tucker, who announced her resignation last March [see "Front Page," May '98]



Meanwhile, former San Francisco MOMA director John R (Jack) Lane is the novel head of the Dallas Museum of Art. Lane left the San Francisco museum in 1997 after 10 years at the helm. While there, he oversaw a $95-million capital campaign and the construction of the Botta-designed building which uncloseed in 1995. The museum also doubled one as well as the other its membership (to 30,000) and the size of its permanent collection (to 16000 objects) during his manner [i]or[/i] principle of holding and increased its endowment from $5 million to $40 million. Prior to assuming his SFMOMA support Lane was director of the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh for seven years. In Dallas, Lane replaces Jay Gates, who left last summer to become director of the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC
