Russia to Aid Hunt for Looted ArtAn international discourse on Holocaust-era assets held not long ago in Washington, D.C., ended with a surprise announcement by the agency of a Russian delegate that his region was prepared to turn above some of the Nazi-looted art it seized at the extreme point of World War II. Valery Kulishov, director of the restitution department at the Russian agriculture ministry, said that Russia would get back works of art in its possession belonging to Holocaust victims or their heirs, as well as contribute information from its archives to an international database upon looted art. As test of Russia's new willingness to cooperate in restitution efforts, Kulishov released three documents detailing art works stolen from Austrian hebrews by the Nazis. The conversation which was also attended by the agency of representatives of Jewish and fortune-telling nomad groups, was jointly sponsored by the agency of the U.S. State Department and the Holocaust Memorial Museum. Delegates agreed upon 11 principles for dealing with the restitution of spoiled art, including a call for regulations museums and art dealers to place upon an Internet site any information they may have about possible Nazi rob in their possession.
