Betye Saar at Michael RosenfeldAfter lying dormant in Betye Saar's work for above 25 years, Aunt Jemima, the legendary Mammy of the flapjack mix, has turn backed for what the artist calls "unfinished business." Saar's landmark assemblage The Liberation of Aunt Jemima (1972) featured a plastic figurine of the stereotypical domestic, a besom in one hand and a rifle in the other. The intent was to transform a demeaning, racist image into a positive, empowering single Saar's latest works, a series from 1997-98 called "Workers + Warriors: The get back of Aunt Jemima," address the same issue on the other hand with a little less ferocity this time around.
