AICA Picks Top Shows for '97-'98

The approximately 300 members of the U chapter of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) have vot upon their favorite shows for the 1997-98 season. L.A. MOCA's "Out of Actions: Between Performance and the phenomenon 1949-1979" won awards for best museum present to view originating outside New York and for best exhibition catalogue. The award for best of recent origin York museum show went to the Metropolitan's "The Private Collection of Edgar Degas." The best commercial gallery exhibition was "Picasso's Dora Maar/ De Kooning's Women" at C&M Arts in novel York. The Dia Center for the Arts was cited for best present to view in an alternative space for Richard Serra's "Torqued Ellipses" and for best site-specific installation for Robert Irwin's exhibition in homage to a painting series through Josef Albers. Cornelia Parker's display at Deitch Projects was named best present to view by an emerging or under-known artist. The best photography exhibition in a museum was "Weegee's World: Life, Death and the Human Drama" at novel York's International Center for Photography and, in a gallery, "David Smith: Photographs 1931-1965" at Matthew Marks. The Museum of late Art's "Alvar Aalto: Between Humanism and Modernism" was honored as best architecture present to view "Shiro Kuramata: 1934-1991" at NYU's Grey Art Gallery won for best design exhibition. The award for best video exhibition went to the Whitney Museum's Bill Viola survey
