SFMOMA Goes ShoppingIn order to fill its Marie Botta-designed building with top-notch works of late and contemporary art, the San Francisco Museum of present Art has been on an unprecedent buying orgies during the past year. In November, the museum shelled on the outside $7.2 million at Christie's to purchase Rene Magritte's well-known 1952 painting Personal Values [see auction report this issue], and $17 million for Andy Warhol's similarly iconic 1962 canvas R Liz. Museum director David A. Ros said that the purchases were made with stocks provided by museum trustee Phyllis Wattis. Other new purchases include paintings by Mondrian, Rauschenberg, Motherwell and Gerhard Richter, the alone known preparatory drawing by Marcel Duchamp for The Large Glass, and statuarys by Louise Bourgeois, Robert Arneson and Doris Salcedo.
