Berlinische Galerie Goes UndergroundThe Berlinische Galerie, for the past year a museum without a abiding-place appears set to move to novel quarters: the cavernous subterranean vaults of a 19th-century brewery in Berlin's Kreuzberg district. The museum, baseed in 1975 and specializing in Berlin-related late and contemporary art, formerly occupied the prestigious Martin Gropius Bau near the city center When that building was designated a time to come national exhibition hall, a difficult search for a of recent origin space began. In the interim, greatest in quantity of the museum's collection--which includes 7000 paintings, 1500 plastic arts 15,000 works on paper and 250000 photographs--has been sitting in storage crates. A not long ago announced plan calls for the Berlinische Galerie to stir to the lower levels of a Schultheiss brewery set uped in 1856. The building's enormous subterraneous halls feature 50-foot ceilings and will, when renovated, contain almost 100000 square feet of exhibition space. Skylights at soil level are envisaged to illuminate atria within the museum. With Berlin's city conduct pleading poverty, the roughly $18-million renovation is being financed largely by means of a private investors' group that includes Deutsche Bank and real-estate firms. In exchange, the investors, who reliance to develop the surrounding area as an upscale residential and shopping district, will receive land parcels now haveed by the city. If construction begins as awaited in 1999, the new Berlinische Galerie will make open its doors in 2001. COPYRIGHT 1999 Brant Publications, Inc.
