Need a Lift?

Manhattan's increasingly far-flung gallery view tests the dedication of die-hard gallery-goers who dash from uptown to Chelsea to SoHo (not to mention other out-of-the-way locales) in harried efforts to diocese shows, often all on a Saturday. Relief has been provided with the Art Shuttle a bus service that hauls gallery visitors back and forth between SoHo the Meatpacking District and Chelsea. Started by the agency of arts professionals Deirdre Scott and James Wintner, the bus makes six stops in the neighborhoods and move swiftlys on Saturdays, every half hour from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 PM Not alone is it an invaluable service, it's now independent thanks to corporate sponsors SoHo Partnership, squadron Bank, Chelsea Market and various businesses in SoHo and Chelsea (initially, there was a $3 compensation for an all-day pass). The shuttle also provides transportation for special occurrences and, according to Scott, is looking to expand service into similar art-rich areas as Williamsburg and DUMBO in Brooklyn drawn out Island City, the Bronx and uptown Manhattan. Call (212) 769-8100 for schedule and course information, or visit the Web site at www.artshuttle.org.
