Anderson Shakes Up the Whitney

of recent origin Whitney Museum director Maxwell Anderson is not upon and running, implementing major administrative changes after sole a couple of months at the helm. In late October, he announced that the museum would restructure its curatorial operations, assigning certain curators a specialty. Anderson felt that the previous freeform combination of parts to form a whole in which no one somebody was in charge of a specific period, was hampering efforts to build the permanent collection. In the restructuring, Eugenie Tsai, former associate curator and curator of branches, has been promot to senior curator in charge of the permanent collection. Tsai replaces Adam Weinberg, who is leaving to become director of the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass. Barbara Haskell is now curator of prewar art; Lisa Phillips is in charge of contemporary art; Chrissie Iles of film and video; Janie C to leeward of drawings; and David Kiehl of prints. The museum will hire sum of two units new curators, one for postwar art (1951-1988) and single for photography.

As we pass to press, there are further disentanglements as a result of these changes: curator Elisabeth Sussman and Thelma of gold director of Whitney branches and previously announced curator of the 2000 biennial, have resigned. The search is upon for a new biennial curator, and it is unclear whether sum of two units shows that Sussman is publicly organizing will appear at the Whitney or elsewhere.

The Whitney will also add three senior administrators to supervise operations, development and external affairs. paces are being taken--such as creating committees of department heads--to decentralize decision-making. Anderson also announced that through spring the museum will be make open six days a week, just in time for its ambitious exhibition "The American Century"
