Estate Planning Made Easy?

A novel book is now available that will help artists navigate their way end the legal process involved in setting up an estate. Published through the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation and the Judith Rothschild Foundation, A Visual Artist's Guide to Estate Planning is the arise of several years of planning and discussions that culminated in a two-day talk which took place in April in of recent origin York. The event was headed up by dint of the Sharpe Foundation's Artists Advisory Committee, which includes Irving Sandler, tap or pat Close, Rob Storr, Cynthia Carlson, Janet Fish, Philip Pearlstein and Harriet Shorr. The conversation brought together artists, accountants, archivists, dealers, curators, lawyers, writers and museum personnel to discuss the practical and legal issues related to artists' estates. The work is written with all artists in mind, from the fortunate to the as-yet-undiscovered, as well as the families, friends and lawyers who may be left in charge of their art works, possessions and legacy.

Part I of the 278-page work is filled with anecdotes, adduces helpful advice and nitty-gritty questions that artists ne to consider when planning in what way their legacy will be preserv Topics include what should be saved; what should be listed in an inventory; by what means work should be preserved and presented; whether the work should be sold donated, reproduc and/or copyrighted; whether further editions or prints ought to be made after the artist's death; and who should benefit from the estate. The volume also provides advice on in what manner to choose an attorney, accountant and executor, and what their piece of works entail.

Part II, written by dint of the Committee on Art Law of the Association of the Bar of the City of of recent origin York, contains information on estate policy and law, allegedly written in language that the average one can grasp. Though still somewhat mind-numbing, this section is "more comprehensible than postmodern criticism," according to Storr. A handy glossary through Barbara Hoffman, chair of the committee, helps decipher the legalese that appears upon the various official forms, samples of which are reproduc in the book's extensive appendices.
