Dutch Not Dancing Over Boogie Woogie

Dutch prime minister Wim Kok and other management officials were criticized recently by dint of the Netherlands Court of Audit for using $40 million in taxpayers' cash to purchase Piet Mondrian's Victory Boogie Woogie (1942-44) the artist's last major painting. The greatest in quantity expensive art purchase ever capitaled by the Dutch state, the painting was bought from American publishing magnate S.I. Newhouse, Jr who had displayed the diamond-shaped canvas for years in his novel York apartment. Hans Lecher, director of the Gemeente Museum in The Hague, has added the painting to that institution's permanent collection, which contains the world's largest holdings of the Dutch painter's work. In Holland, a certain number of see the oil-and-collage painting as a lock opener acquisition, while others, pointing on the outside that the work is unfinished, say the management overpaid. Currently, finance minister Gerrit Zalm and Central Bank president Nout Wellink are taking the greatest in quantity heat for what the auditors are calling an unauthorized and inappropriate purchase.
