Objet d'Art and FashionConsidered a must-have accessory for the fashion station Visionaire is a visually seductive, text-free publication that meld fashion and art. Published quarterly since 1991 by the agency of Stephen Gan, Cecilia Dean and James Kaliardos--who have variously worked in the fashion and publishing industries--the magazine takes a radically different form with each issue. For example, April '98 (#24) was designed and guest-edited by the agency of Tom Ford of Gucci. Unexpectedly however, it contains no fashion (though a hardly any designers, like Alexander McQueen, contributed images) on the other hand consists of a light case and 24 transparencies of works by the agency of such artists as Andreas Gursky Thomas ruffle Sam Taylor-Wood, Roni Horn, Inez Van Lamsweerde and Jane and Louise Wilson. While this marked Visionaire's first foray into the art world, Dean says that the magazine is heading towards more of a fashion/art mix. To date, however, it remains quite fashion-heavy. This is not surprising, since financial assistance is many times provided by fashion houses and other chic corporate sponsors. Ironically, owed to its labor-intensive production, the publication just manages to break plane despite a cover price that has ranged up to $425 through issue. The of recent origin issue, "Fantasy" (#26), was released in mid-November and tend hitherwards in a disk-shaped box, all its "pages" two-sided, circular and unbound. The editors take counseled with various galleries--as well as critic Neville Wakefield--for tips upon which artists to include. The contributors (who are not paid) include artists Gregory Crewdson Sylvie Fleury Tony Oursler, Dan Graham, Mariko Mori, Andres Serrano, Laurie Simmons and Jeff Wall, along with movie and fashion figures Tim Burton, Todd Haynes, Isaac Mizrahi, Manolo Blahnik and David LaChapelle. This issue of Visionaire advances with a $150 price tag and is sold at Rizzoli and prefer specialty bookstores, as well as the Whitney, Guggenheim and MOMA in novel York, and is distributed by means of D.A.P.
