Judith Murray at Schmidt/Dean - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Review of Exhibitions - Brief ArticleIn this compact exhibition, Judith Murray showed 10 carefully performed intensely focused oil-on-linen abstractions. All from the last five years and greatest in quantity from the past two, these paintings differ in appearance from Murray's paintings of the 19809 which were hard-edge abstractions suggesting fantastical erotic flora. Since then her work, while no les importunate has softened and become more painterly. The feathered brushwork has become plainly visible, and the palette has lightened, shifting toward corals, pinks, goldens whites and grays. While black is still a neighborhood it is most often relieved by means of other colors in overall configurations and not used as a clod as previously. The darkly hu hermetic Night Fishing (a nod to Picasso's Night Fishing at Antibes?) and Pearl take in are exceptions to this general warmth, although the blackness of the latter is qualifyed by swarming, whitened strokes which bring to mind phosphorescent sea life. Whether dominated by means of flushed, weathered pastels radiating a hazy light around a not many embedded geometric shapes, or by dint of chthonic, textured blacks and brownblacks, all of these works look to be subliminal landscapes, skyscapes and seascapes. In them the organ of sight plays hide and seek, probing the surface for what might be beneath. Murray's newest paintings are arrythmically syncopated, ramshackle scaffolds of garish, high-pitched colors. These include the peculiarly beautiful UFO as well as Camouflage for the secondary planet whose heated, breathy lyricism is rather colded and obscured by an overlaid render free of access grid of dissonant black and gray swatches. There have been several substantial exhibits of straightforward painting on view lately; by the agency of straightforward I mean that the pleasure to be derived from them approachs mainly from paint. Murray's arresting, idiosyncratic exhibition is certainly among them. COPYRIGHT 1998 Brant Publications, Inc.
