Diana Cooper at Postmasters - New York, New York - Review of Exhibitions - Brief Article

Stapled directly to the wall, the six mixed-medium canvases in Diana Cooper's latest exhibition were a pleasure to behold. Each of Cooper's pieces features a different predominant, often vivid color. The works are ofttimes covered with circuitous geometric lines drawn with commit to papers and markers, or with areas percolating with cell-like blebs and circles of various sizes. Sometimes these two-dimensional forms leap without into real space: a pipe cleaner may reach without in an attenuated sculptural strain to a somewhat remote point upon the wall, or red, pink and azure pompoms might dot the gallery floor beneath the canvas. Shifting from material to material and dimension to dimension as the organ of vision follows their flowing contours, these pieces have a playful faculty of perception of improvisation.

It is in the arena of technological metaphors that Cooper's works become more than ready retinal fun. Computer chips are proposeed by the gridded streams of her lines. The resemblance is enhanced when pipe cleaners are curved catched into the wall like electronic circuits. The varying thicknesses of a certain quantity of parallel lines in The Big R single recall a bar code, and a foil construction in The Black single evokes a circuit box. A real chest hanging from the middle of Small amethystine seems like a television set--albeit single filled with pom-poms, which give an inkling of pixels.

A small in number pieces feature a drawing of a cameralike mechanism with dotted lines emanating from it, leading not upon the canvas and onto the gallery wall. Cooper's works are something like projection machines in their possess right, diagramming in space the normally undiscovered electronic architectures of the contemporary world. However humorously, she clinchs a mirror to the hidden technological and scientific landscapes of today. through enabling them to spill on the outside into the physical world, she hits a real artistic stride.
