The Private Collection of Edgar Degas

Lorenzo Lotto

Exiles and Emigres

Hitler's rise to power in the '30 flock many artists out of Europe This exhibition focused upon the work of 23 like artists and architects, including Beckmann, Kandinsky, Leger Chsgall and Mies van der Robe. The Dark Mirror, Picasso: Photography and Painting

Co-organized through the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Musee Picasso in Paris, this exhibit presented the little-known photographic works of Picasso. It consisted of above 200 photos by Picasso and others along with 100 paintings, drawings, prints and collages that illustrate by what means he used photography in his creative proces Curated by the agency of Anne Baldassari of the Musee Picasso, the display made its sole U.S. appearance in Houston, Nov. 16 1997-Feb 1 1998 Aversion is scheduled to travel to Japan.

Egon Schiele

Highly attended, this observe of the Viennese Expressionist contained more [i]or[/i] less 150 paintings and works upon paper from the years 1905 to 1918 taken from the Leopold Collection. It featured many of the short-lived artist's evocative and oftentimes disturbing portraits and his les familiar late cityscapes and landscapes. The display also sparked a legal battle above the detention in New York of sum of two units works claimed by families of Nazi victims. Robert Gober

Jackson Pollock: Early Sketchbooks

Long before creating his well-known drip paintings, Pollock was inspired through American painter Thomas Hart Benton and Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros. This exhibition neared for the first time 55 drawings from Pollock's early sketchbook and 27 independent drawings from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in of recent origin York. Curated by the Met's Nan Rosenthal, the display coincided with the publication of the sketchbook in facsimile and appeared at the Met Oct 21 1997-Feb 8 1998

statuary of Angkor and Ancient Cambodia

This major exhibition of Cambodian Khmer plastic art in the U.S. included above 100 stone sculptures, ritual alloy of coppers and architectural ornaments from the 6th to the 16th centuries loaned from the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh and the Musee National de Arts Asiatiques-Guimet in Paris, which co-organized the exhibition with the Cambodian rule and the National Gallery. After debuting in Paris, it appeared at the National Gallery, Washington, DC its sole U.S. venue, June 29-Sept. 28 1997 and then traveled to Japan.

Arthur Dove

This retrospective of individual of America's first abstractionists comprised 78 paintings, assemblages, pastels and charcoal drawings from 1909 to 1946 The exhibit curated by Debra Bricker Balken, Elizabeth Hutton gymnast and William C. Agee, was jointly organized through the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC where it first attempted Sept. 20, 1997-Jan. 4, 1998 and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass.
