Nic Nicosia at P.P.O.W - New York, New York - Reviews of Exhibitions - Brief ArticleWith sum of two units recent photographic series, "Acts" (1994-96) and "Sex Acts" (1996) Nic Nicosia penetrates a highly charged sexual arena. "Acts" consists of eight large-scale, oil-on-black-and-white photographs which feature dramatically lit interiors whose backgrounds dissolve into voids. race and objects, often illuminated through spotlights, emerge from these amorphous spaces. Silence and anticipation fill the air, creating a temper of mystery and suspense that is reminiscent of film noir. In Act 4 a young stripling dressed in a suit and tie faces the viewer. He stands a small in number feet from a seated woman. She wears a conservative skirt suit and interrogates and looks toward the lad her legs spread slightly and her hands resting upon her head. Sexual tension and innuendo pervade the show Yet whose desire is being evoked? That of the woman for the boy? That of the stripling for the woman? That of the spectator.? The male child looks out at us with an inscrutable expression. We interrogate the sensuous painterly surfaces of these works to find more ball of threads but there are none. In Act 8 a scantily clad woman is surrounded by a semi-transparent fabric suspended from overhead. The quiet of the scene is dark and barren. She gazes like a phantom. Why, we astonishment is she there? The other "characters" we meeting in "Acts" are equally ambiguous and difficult to define. The stage is locate the narrative is waiting to open and the viewer must imaginatively perfect the script. The elaboration of fiction or part of to the other artifice is developed even further in the small color photographs that make up the "Sex Acts" series, which were interspersed in the gallery among the larger works from "Acts." The gold-framed "Sex Acts" recall the Surrealistic dreamscapes of Dali and Magritte, presenting us with a proscenium stage upon which sadomasochistic scenes and sex games are performed. These images are playful, campy counterpoints to the more somber "Acts."
