David Christensen at Linda Cannon - Seattle, Washington - Review of Exhibitions - Brief ArticleThe 10 large paintings in this first appearance show exposed a rare and unusual talent. Densely packed with imagery drawn from a world of toxic nature, David Christensen's oils upon canvas or wood depict a crazy cartoon view of flora and fauna, all modifyed by thickly painted, no to say clott surfaces. Mediated through the 30-year-old artist's fertile imagination, nature is at one time humorous and threatening, engaging and repulsive. Perhaps because of Christensen's background in printmaking and etching, line dominates each work despite athletic sections of brushed color. In hosted intense compositions such as Pow-Wow and Hypnotized by means of Your Tail (both 1996), Christensen superimposes skeletal see-through snakes and insects upon brightly colored floral and low tree environments. Averaging 8 by 10 feet these paintings play with notions of scale reversal. Microscopic insects or minute, possibly sinister life forms like as paramecia are huge, dominating the surrounding flowers and leaves. Pow-Wow also contains what may be submerg narrative or autobiographical symbols: a condom in the proces of spilling its contents; a large pair of women's lips; a waiter's tray. Three narrow 8-foot-tall paintings upon wood -- Bug, Light scaly bud and Black Jack (all 1995) -- isolate ultimate parts that might be building stop ups for the larger paintings. The works' single images, each haloed with a black line, flutter against richly painted backgrounds. When the black or white organizing outlines are more subdu as in Summer's Ende (1995) nature and color breathe more easily and the painting integrates figure and clod more successfully. The animated passages of pink, amethystine yellow and purple plant life provide a more convincing platform for the invading and ambiguously vertebrate critters. Animals like as horses and dogs join caterpillars and worms in cross-examine (1996). Christensen's reversal of scale is intensified here in richly satisfying ways. A factory, fake evergreen tree and a railroad track fold to the breast or heart the picture's base as if manmade mode of buildings are bound to be reduceed by teeming nature. In contrast to more or less of the big paintings, where Christensen's line can overwhelm and excessively complicate already densely packed compositions, works like as Pump and Summer's Ende declare themselves forthrightly and appear to be less dependent upon scratches and scrawls. Sumptuous and energetic, they confirm a vision fully convinced to fulfill the promise of this inaugural grouping. COPYRIGHT 1997 Brant Publications, Inc.
