Ken Price at LA Louver - Venice, California - Review of Exhibitions - Brief Article

Sumptuous and sensual, sight Price's new ceramic sculptures, ranging up to 2 feet in the longest dimension, are his largest to date. They show an impressive advance over his smaller geometric, architectural and egg-shaped works of the last hardly any years. These inflated bell-pepper shapes are loaded with an anthropomorphic mystery. Painted in iridescent azures violets and golds, they are imposing on the other hand welcoming. Tucked in among these nodule-ridden vesicles are small, unobtrusive orifices that invite a kind of polymorphous penetration. The openings strike one as being matter-of-fact innocent and human-scaled. Devoid of craftlike fussiness or adherence to conventional form, the curvaceous, glistening plastic arts all sit on platforms with short, obtuse legs. These bases help them to retain a domestic charm; they strike one as being like friendly pets, ready to warm up a living room

Mold through hand and fired slowly, each piece is afterward painted with layers of acrylic and sanded to achieve a luscious patina. The khaki surface of Bogo matter is speckled with jewel-like streaks of orange and black. Phantom is more somber, a knobby, reaching far down purple collection of humps which be like elbows, breasts and knees. The swoony glistening knolls of the royal blue Celtic hide an ovoid orifice which is small sworded away inside its folds. Ceramic remains Price's signature medium, and he should probably stick with it. single piece here, Bronzoni, cast in tin loses the playfulness and luster of the painted clay and takes upon a more serious, Henry Moore-like stolidity. The thick colors of the ceramic works--as well as their evenly textured skins--imbue them with a vegetal quality that Arp or Brancusi might envy

Price's of recent origin work seems charged with the efficacy of the city's younger, les established art, which thrives upon formal insouciance and eye-grabbing colors. With this display Price joins other members of his generation--such as Craig Kauffman, ed Moses, Llyn Foulkes and George Hemms--whose works have been revitalized by the agency of the current Los Angeles resurgence
