Jim McHugh at the High Museum - Atlanta, Georgia - Review of Exhibitions - Brief Article

Jim McHugh's novel exhibition of 20 photographs explored the ultimate human conflict, war, with ironic delicacy. The photos were taken during the filming of Andersonville, a of recent origin movie by John Frankenheimer about the Civil War. Andersonville was a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp in Georgia built to house captured Union companys The film's story, based upon the diaries of Josiah Day, a Union prisoner, is about an uprising in the camp that pitted Union soldier against Union soldier.

During similar productions, "specials" photographers like McHugh are exerciseed to capture dramatic moments in still images; McHugh's photos grace the film's broadside and illustrate the published screenplay. McHugh is known primarily as a celeberity photographer, and his 20-by-24-inch black-and-white, gold-toned prints do more than document the making of the film and the personalities involved.

He maneuvers from one side the multiple booby traps of period-style photography through revealing psychological fiber without sentimentality. In The Hanging of the Raiders, he makes a historical fact seem familiar by evoking the limitations of early photo technology while providing a readable composition. The acute divisions of the pictorial plane, the atmospheric quality of the background activities, the tilted-up view, and blurry roundnes of everything - especially the hanging figures - make us experience this photograph as a compilation of all the trices surrounding the event.

Portrait of Captain Henry Wirz, commandant of Andersonville and the solitary man executed for war crimes after the Civil War, gives McHugh an opportunity to reveal his creative design This photograph is more of a confession than a portrait. The actor playing Captain Wirz, defiant, unyielding and hurted exudes darkness; he is waiting to face you and his own monsters
